My whole professional career has revolved around helping students succeed and gain confidence in their own abilities. As a higher education professional, I worked with students on academic probation to pinpoint the sources of their academic challenges and provide personalized support to help them move forward. As a professional private tutor and founder of Carpenter Tutoring, LLC, I work with families and students one on one, learning both the things that hold students back and the places where parents feel unsupported.
Blending both lenses together, I realized that there is a growing gap between the expectations of college and the opportunities that students have to apply and hone skills in high school. The students who were on academic probation weren't bad students; they just didn't know the skills they needed to be successful in college, and they were trying to build the tools and abilities their professors assumed they already had. At the same time, high school students who didn't have to study much outside of class or stick to hard deadlines assumed that college would work the same way. Suddenly, students who earned As and Bs in high school were finding themselves earning Cs, Ds, and even Fs in college, and they didn't understand what was going wrong.
No one deserves that kind of introduction to college.
My goal is to make the transition to college as approachable, tangible, practical, and compassionate as possible for parents and students alike. From students who need to learn how to study or who are anxious about life away from home to parents who are overwhelmed by all the application process lingo or aren't sure how to navigate the new parent-child relationship that college brings, Confidently College is for you.
